October 19, 2023

Two inspirational songs from Reverb Worship PH, CBN Asia’s music arm, earn back-to-back nominations at this year’s Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA).

“Sa‘Yo Lang” by Jex de Castro and Joselle Feliciano has been named a finalist for Best Inspirational Song. Penned by the talented Lucas Miguel, this comforting compositionreleased last December 2022 continues to remind listeners where to find real peace and love.

“All we wanted to do was to hold a voice for those in grief, especially after the pandemic, when we've all lost so much. I wish that with this recognition, more people will get to listen to the song, find in it a safe space for their grief and disappointments, and ultimately point them to the bearer of lasting hope, joy, and comfort—Jesus Christ,” Joselle shared.

Meanwhile, “Pansumandali” has earned its place as a finalist for Best Music Video category. Directed by the visionary Timothy Yee, the music video perfectly encapsulatesthe message of the song written, composed, and performed by Shekinah Gram—God’s love is constant. The heart-tuggingvisuals were brought to life through the lens of its Director of Photography, Play Layugan.

Shekinah recalled, “It took a year before we produced the music video for Pansumandali. We faced rejections and tears, but God had a better plan. This CMMA nomination is such an encouragement. Glory to God that His ways are always better. Cheers to the Reverb Worship team and everyone who watched the MV!”

To CBN Asia’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer John Valdes Tan, getting the nods from CMMA is a testament to the exceptional talent of the Reverb Worshipteam, and an inspiration to create more songs that promote good values and honor God.

“Our recent selection as finalists in CMMA makes me so proud of our Reverb Worship artists and songs. Aside from the wonderful messages of Reverb songs, the production value is at par with the country’s best and the yearly recognition of CMMA is a testament to that. CBN Asia is proud of the talents behind each song and music video. We praise God for these recognitions.”

AXEAN Festival 2023 unveils final lineup, featuring multi-genre acts from Taiwan

October 19, 2023

The additional performers are supported and co-presented by Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA)

AXEAN Festival, Southeast Asia’s first collaborative intraregional music showcase festival, announces the final roster of its artist slate from Taiwan.

Supported by the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA), the third batch of performers includes four-piece instrumental act CICADA, Taiwanese-British act NIO, and an all-star performance featuring collaborations by jazz-funk band Robot Swing, Canadian-Taiwanese rapper LEO37, and new music darling Star Wu.

"We’re very excited to have Taiwan representation in AXEAN Festival,” shares co-founder David Siow. “We pride ourselves in presenting acts that are great live, and these 3 bands are no exception. With now 50 bands over 4 stages, beers from ASEAN countries, an art exhibition, AXEAN Festival is guaranteed to be a heck of a party."

Established in 2019 by the Ministry of Culture, TAICCA supports the production, distribution, development, and overseas expansion of audiovisual content, digital content, music, comic, performing art, and more.

Get to know the lineup addition

NIO is currently the most exciting pop sensation in Taiwan, having recently won the popular songwriting reality show Music Maker (音乐主理人), solidifying his spot as one of the best young singer songwriters in Taiwan at the moment. NIO released his four track EP ANTI FOG LENSES earlier in February this year, and has recently returned with new singles 'Sometimes' and 'When You Gonna (Get Your Shit Together)'.

Cicada is a four piece instrumental band formed in 2009, and named after the insect that people often hear around themselves in nature and is instantly recognisable by its sound. The band was nominated for the “Best Instrumental Album Production” award at the 2020 Golden Melody Awards for their album Hiking In The Mist, as well as the “Best Instrumentalist” award at the 2023 Golden Indie Music Awards for their latest album Seeking the Sources of Streams.

The band was also involved in creating the soundtrack to the critically acclaimed 2022 Japanese thriller film A Man, which premiered at the 79th Venice Film Festival. For their work on the film, Cicada was nominated for the “Best Music” award at the 46th Japan Academy Film Prize.

Robot Swing is a jazz funk band that is symbolic of the ever evolving indie music sound in Taiwan. Incorporating elements of R&B, soul, funk and jazz in their music, the groovy band has collaborated with musicians from all backgrounds, including pop sensation Hung Peiyu, Tamil rapper SVDP and saxophonist Hsieh Minyen. They were recognised with a nomination for the “Best Rhythm & Blues Song” at the 2021 Golden Indie Music Awards. Their debut album System Booting… was also nominated for the “Best Band” award at the 2023 Golden Melody Awards, and won the “Best New Artist” award at Singapore’s very own Freshmusic Awards.

Robot Swing will be joined by frequent collaborator and producer LEO37, a Canadian-Taiwanese veteran hip hop musician and rapper who is instrumental in the advancements made by the Taiwanese indie hip hop scene over the past decade. LEO37 has been involved in some of the biggest hip hop events in Taiwan’s history, including the first-ever appearance of Wu-Tang Clan in Taiwan, as well as some of the largest and highest grossing hip hop shows in Taiwan, taking the Taiwanese hip hop talents onto a global stage.

SHANNi marks her official debut asrecording artist under Sony Music Entertainment

October 18, 2023

Listen to her first single “sa panaginip”

Coming from a lineage of musicians with a known history of creative integrity and a strong sense of DIY spirit, SHANNiproves that there’s more to her surname than meets the eye.

The young singer-songwriter officially makes her entrance as a recording artist with a refreshing new single that showcases vulnerability beyond her years. Aptly titled “sa panaginip,” the song stands out with its lilting, throwback sound and jazz-pop edge.

SHANNi reveals that the storytelling behind “sa panaginip” was inspired by The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a movie about love’s inevitable imperfections and the difficulty of purging the memories that once defined it. SHANNi wrote the track when she was in grade 10 after watching the film for the very first time.

“I called it sa panaginip, because it shows that memories and emotions aren’t easy to forget,” the promising newcomer explains. “It’s all the more difficult to erase when the experience contributes significantly to your journey as a person. You won’t be able to escape the truth, even in your dreams.”

“sa panaginip” is solely written by SHANNi, who served as one of its producers. One Click Straight’s Sam Marquez mixed and mastered the song, with Blaster Silongacontributing background vocals. The result is an intimate release that helps listeners make sense of their own world, one step at a time—a recording that emits a strong musical identity even in its rawness and youthful innocence.

SHANNi is a singer-songwriter based in Metro Manila whose music is often described as a mixture of classic city pop and jazz-influenced synth-pop and funk. Looking for ways to push herself creatively and expand her gift to the best of her abilities, the budding alternative artist is inspired to make music that isn’t just confined to a specific niche or box. As reflected in her personal mantra, “I think about all of the amazing things that can be done with music, and wonder what I’d be willing to do to get there.”

The Filipino music prodigy is the younger sister of eclectic art-pop artist Blaster Silonga (IV of Spades and Blaster and the Celestial Klowns) and the daughter of Daddy A (K247 and Daddy’s Home) and niece of Shar (Smokey Mountain). Her siblings Dave and Leyna Silonga, are also part of SHANNI’s band, as bassist and guitarist, respectively.

SHANNi is currently signed under Sony Music Entertainment.

“sa panaginip” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide.

88rising has released the official audio and music video for “World Stop Turning,” a new single from its new media & artist collective, 1999 WRITE THE FUTURE. For its launch, the collective tapped artists Rich Brian, Warren Hue and Zion.T.

“World Stop Turning” is a dreamy R&B earworm with cozy melodies. The singer/rapper trio reminisce on former relationships, looking back on spurned lovers who won’t be missed when the world stops turning.

The accompanying music video portrays Rich Brian, Warren Hue and Zion.T spending a Sunday afternoon with friends and family, offering a glimpse into the lives of people within their community. From backyard mahjong games to pickup basketball in the driveway, the serenity of the neighborhood is the backdrop to the video. A further nod to the nostalgia of Asian-American culture in the new video, vintage Honda vehicles — from the 1996 Civic Hatchback that the artists are chilling in, to the throwback CRX, Prelude, S2000 and Acura Integra — take the 88rising artists on a procession through their neighborhood while celebrating the popular Asian car culture scene of this era.

Watch the “World Stop Turning” music video HERE

Featured in the “World Stop Turning” music video is Rich Brian and Warren Hue wearing the “88 Type R” capsule, a limited-edition apparel collaboration between 88rising and Honda. The unisex collection, which includes cut-and-sew pieces, debuted and quickly sold out in August at 88rising’s Head In The Clouds Music & Arts Los Angeles Festival. To celebrate the release of the track, a new limited edition “88 Type R” Black Athletic Jersey from 88rising and Honda will be available for a limited time for purchase on 88NIGHTMARKET here.

Grrrl Gang returns to Manila with ‘Spunky!’ headline show

October 13, 2023

The three-piece alt pop band leads the 38th edition of The Rest Is Noise PH’s bi-monthly showcase

Indonesian indie-pop trio Grrrl Gang will be coming back to Manila for a show in lieu of the worldwide release of their new album, Spunky!.

Known for their infectious melodies, anthemic songs, and electrifying live performances, Grrrl Gang will be headlining The Rest Is Noise 38, happening on Friday, November 10, at the Balcony Music House in Makati City. The Rest Is Noise PH, Kolibri Records, and Offshore Music are proud to present the return of Grrrl Gang in the country.

“We’re really excited to see new and familiar faces when we perform in Manila again,” Grrrl Gang shared in a press statement. “Especially now that we have a full album to present to the Manila crowd, we’re looking forward to seeing you all. We hope to have the best time together.”

The event will also feature special guests in the lineup, including multi-awarded singer-songwriter Clara Benin, eclectic indie rock outfit Oh, Flamingo!, experimental pop savant ena mori, indie newcomer Ligaya Escueta, and bedroom pop project The Purest Blue, who is currently signed under Kolibri Records, the same label handling GrrrlGang releases.

The critically acclaimed band recently made waves on the cover of NME for the month of October, promoting their full-length album, Spunky!, which was released in September 2023 in partnership with iconic American indie label, Kill Rock Stars (US), Trapped Animal Records (Europe), and Big Romantic Records (Japan and Taiwan). Upon initial release, the record earned rave reviews from various international publications, including Spin Magazine, which crowned them as the “New Darlings of Southeast Asian Indie Rock.”

Pre-sale tickets are available at PHP 800 for limited quantities only, and regular/door tickets are priced at PHP 1,000. Tickets are available on October 13, Friday (2 pm) via this link: bit.ly/trin38.

About GRRL GANG

Indonesian trio Grrrl Gang build on their considerable worldwide buzz with Spunky!, their full-length debut album. Released on 27 September 2023 by Green Island Music in partnership with exclusive licensees Kill Rock Stars (for North and South America), Trapped Animal Records (UK and EU) and Big Romantic Records (Japan and Taiwan), the album is preceded by its title track and first single which drops on May 31.

Spunky! arrives following some major life changes for Angeeta Sentana (vocals, guitar), Akbar Rumandung (bass, vocals) and Edo Alventa (guitar, vocals), including a switch in locale from Yogyakarta, the city where they formed the band while still in college. “This is Grrrl Gang’s first release after we graduated and got day jobs that made us have to move to Jakarta, which is undeniably 180 degrees compared to Yogya,” says Rumandung. “But moving to Jakarta enabled us to work with Lafa on Spunky! from start to finish.”

Overall, Spunky! is the sound of a band not content to rest on its laurels, despite gathering an impressive list of achievements since Grrrl Gang first got together in 2016 and proceeded to take the local, regional, and international indie scenes by storm, leading to a prestigious performance slot on the pandemic-induced online edition of SXSW 2021 and an A- review that esteemed music critic Robert Christgaubestowed upon Here to Stay!, the 2020 compilation of their early singles. According to Rumandung, “We want this album to show that we’ve changed, that Grrrl Gang is a band that isn’t stuck in one place and that we always have the urge to discover new things.”

In other words, Spunky! proves that Grrrl Gang are – to borrow a familiar phrase – here to stay.

“My Love Mine All Mine” is an instant classic, hailed by Exclaim! as “both heartbreaking and hopeful, the kind of careful balance that Mitski has fine tuned in the decade since her debut.”  It’s the beating heart of the album, wherein the singer imagines their love shining down on the earth from the moon, long after the speaker is gone:  “Moon, a hole of light/Through the big top tent up high/Here before and after me/Shining down on me/Moon, tell me if I could/Send up my heart to you/So when I die, which I must do/Could it shine down here with you.”

Mitski’s most sonically expansive, epic, and wise album to-date, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We was produced with Patrick Hyland and recorded at both the Bomb Shelter in East Nashville and Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, incorporating an orchestra arranged and conducted by Drew Erickson as well as a full choir of 17 people — 12 in Los Angeles and 5 in Nashville — arranged by Mitski. For the first time it felt important to Mitski to have a band recording live together in the studio to create this new sublime sound.

Mitski wrote these songs in little bursts over the past few years, and they feel informed by moments of noticing – noticing a sound that’s out of place, a building that groans in decay, an opinion that splits a room, a feeling that can’t be contained in a body. The album is full of the ache of the grown-up, seemingly mundane heartbreaks and joys that are often unsung but feel enormous. From the bottom of a glass, to a driveway slushy with memory and snow, to a freight train barreling through the Midwest, and all the way to the moon, it feels like everything, and everyone, is crying out, screaming in pain, arching towards love.

Praise for Mitski & The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We

"Mitski has a gift for singing serenely about troubled thoughts and finding large implications in small images." — New York Times

“[Mitski’s] most beautiful record yet.” — NYLON

“It’s [Mitski’s] most cohesive work to date, with a mood akin to ice melting in a whiskey glass: crisp, bitterly refreshing.” — Stereogum

“From album to album, Mitski’s music moves through styles like seasons.” — New York Magazine

“A richly ambitious writer and arranger who can buttress longing with strange and lovely art-rock.” — Los Angeles Times

“The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We is another evolution: a mix of quotidian-yet-elliptical lyricism, classic country accompaniment, daring orchestral movements, and the musician’s unique brand of storytelling.” — Rolling Stone

"No one writes dejection quite like Mitski, for whom resignation can be the subject of sparkling disco-pop, a genius anthemic chorus, or an intimate confession." — Pitchfork

“Few artists know how to masterfully unearth humanity’s most disappointing and frustrating characteristics, and fewer do so lovingly.” — Associated Press

“What really makes this album one of the year’s most exciting is the reaffirmation of Mitski’s commitment to making music only she can make. This Land, so to speak, was not made for you and me. It was made for Mitski and Mitski alone, and that is a wonderful thing.” — Uproxx

"The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We finds Mitski at her most peaceful, hopeful, and, yes, loving." — Consequence

“There are an awful lot of singer-songwriters around exploring the kind of subjects Mitski touches on here . . . But it is questionable whether anyone else is doing it with this much skill, this lightness of touch or indeed, straightforward melodic power: in the best possible sense, Mitski feels out on her own.” — The Guardian, ★★★★★

“[The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We] is truly extraordinary – it is a once-in-a-career masterpiece.” — The Skinny, ★★★★★

Filipino singer-songwriter BenjPangilinan captures the feeling of youthful excitement on new single “Dance Like You”

October 11, 2023

The upbeat track encourages listeners to dance their worries away and surrender to the beat of a fun, vibrant day

Filipino singer-songwriter Benj Pangilinan expresses the joy of living life with a positive mindset on his new single “Dance Like You,” out today via Sony Music Entertainment.

Encapsulating the essence of youthful excitement in a euphoric, four-minute pop song, the talented newcomer grabs his dancing shoes to sing about seizing the moment with a cheerful disposition in life and love.

"Dance Like You is a song for all ages and all people who just want to have fun and dance,” Pangilinan explains. “I wrote this song a couple of years ago, during the pandemic. I remember just playing the guitar when I suddenly came up with an interesting chord progression. Instantly, I picked up my phone and opened the Voice Memos app. From there, I remember getting this feeling that a song was about to be made.”

Giving listeners a well-needed shot of dopamine, Pangilinan’s catchy new song hits like sunlight passing through a glass window first thing in the morning. It’s a bop that offers a hearty dose of fun and optimism.

According to Benj Pangilinan, he penned “Dance Like You” with the intention of not overthinking the lyrics. The promising young artist made the song with a vision to bridge two generations of music that allow listeners of varying generations to let loose, have fun, and dance.

His frequent collaborator, the Grammy-nominated Xerxes Bakker, produced the track with a timeless, contemporary edge, giving Benj the opportunity to express himself authentically and showcase his vibrant personality.

“Dance Like You” will be part of an EP to be released soon under Sony Music Entertainment. In sharing the details about his highly anticipated debut record, Benj shares in a press statement that the EP is just him “experimenting and figuring out who” he is as an artist. “I'm super excited to share this with all of you. My work has always been a reflection of my journey towards self-discovery. I hope that in some way or another, I’ll be able to inspire people with my songs.”

The infectious track serves as the followup to his first single “Love, That’s Rare,” which he wrote to reflect on the conflicting emotions he was experiencing at the time. Watch the music video here.
